In the second in our three-part Holiday Gift Ideas series, we have selected another six colorful projects from our Citrus Holiday collection. You have plenty of time to make one or more of these welcome gifts before the holidays. Our tutorials are clear and easy to follow for even the beginning sewer.
( The party is best explained in photos... )
We thought about going out to a bar or somewhere to show off the group costume, but that didn't happen. And it was fine, we were having too much fun being geeky on our own. I also got the next two Sookie books from Jen. I'm about a third through Dead to the World and loving all the Pam and Eric! That's going to be a very good season of TB.

*I did not mean to kill his fish. I merely added some water at a perfect 72 degrees to the tank. And they came over all dead-like the next day. And the day after. And the day after that. And the day after that.
**I discovered this while looking up remedies for stuffed up nose (saltwater rinse works awesome, by the way). A person only breathes through one nostril at a time (put your finger 1/2 inch under your nose to see which nostril you're using), and which side is dominated by the hemisphere of the brain that is currently active. Left brain: right nostril. Right brain: left nostril. Unless you're stimulating your brain to use one side of the other, each hemisphere dominates in cycles that last from two to four hours. You can also clarify your thinking and balance your brain by using the yoga technique of pinching one nostril shut and breathing out of one side and then the other a few times. Cool, yes? Okay, so it's not. but now you've learned something against your will.
And now, number of bags I'm off to pack for my flight? 1
If your favorite teen were granted three wishes from her/his own personal genie, what would they be? Twelve fingers to allow for faster texting? A school day, which started at noon and ended at 1:00 with an hour for lunch? That all days would be good hair days? The options are likely as endless as a late-night phone call. Whip up a few of these darling tufted and tasseled genie pillows and see what wishes come true for you.

Welcome your guests to their seats with a stylish place card and a little surprise. These favor bags are so easy and quick to make; it took only one hour to make and finish enough for six place settings. This is a great fabric scrap project. One bag uses just a 6" x 13" piece of fabric. Use up leftovers from our Thanksgiving Arts & Crafts style tablecloth and napkin tutorials or try contrasting fabric.
I preferred the first opener and it wasn't even the full band! The band's called The Alternate Routes and his band took an "alternate route" and couldn't be there (that's my bad joke, haha). Their van hit a deer so the band was stuck with the van getting fixed. The lead singer came alone to the show and did a mostly solo show. He had help from Toby one of the roadies who did backup guitar for him.
The best part was the toolbox song! First of all it's a catchy tune ("The Future's Nothing New"), secondly it involves a toolbox with a microphone as an instrument, and finally he was singing, toolboxing, playing harmonica and tambourine all at the same time. I found a live version of the song with the full band: ( Video )
The second opener was Serena Ryder, who's the free Discovery Download on iTunes this week. She was pretty good, I thought she was funny and had good energy. And good hair movement. She was particularly good when she was acapella for 2 songs. Her music/voice made me think of Melissa Etheridge.
Then it was Needtobreathe! Who came out to Beck's "Where it's At" and from there did a great set of their new songs and hits from their last albums. I didn't know the new album except "The Girl Named Tennessee" which they played at the last concert and gave as a free download with preordered tickets to the show. There wasn't a song that I didn't like but I liked best the old songs ("More Time", "Washed by the Water"), "Stones Under Rushing Water" and "Something Beautiful" which they closed with an acoustic version. And I can't help but smile about Bo, who's adorable on the guitar.
There were only 2 "bad" things. Danny Zerott was not working at the Varsity that night, we had talked about it at Adam's wedding but I knew it was a long shot that he'd show up. It would have been fun though. And I ignored my good judgement and wore my boots to the show. The Varsity is mostly standing room only and my feet started to ache at the end. I expected that. I did not expect for my right heel to be killing me days after the show. I wonder if I bruised the bone or something. It kills to walk to my bus in the morning and home at night.
I'm making a list of things I need, taking measurements and plan to go shopping this weekend. I might first surf Free Cycle and Craigslist for furniture items (night stands, lamps, dining table and chairs). I'd like to get a little padded trunk for the end of my bed and a headboard too.
Some things I like about the new place:
Heat lamp in the bathroom
Dishwasher
Quiet and privacy (esp. when I add blinds!)
Being above ground and enjoying extra sunlight
Convenience to work
Minneapolis skyline view (I'll see if I can get a good photo and add it tomorrow night)
Some things I miss about the old apartment:
Efficient morning routine – much quicker when everything is in one room!
Bus route #3 – long enough I could listen to my iPod and friendly college kids, work commuters are a gloomy bunch
Heat that I don't pay for – can be as toasty as I want!
Ironically, hearing people come and go in the building
I almost wish the guys next door were a little louder so it doesn't seem as scary/lonely. Actually I should just avoid reading Google News before bed. I’ve found myself drawn to reading about the Ohio rapist with the bodies in his house. So awful and scary! It makes my overactive imagination work overtime. But I lock all my doors and my bedroom door and there's a dowel blocking the sliding door as extra protection. I'm really not worried until I'm trying to sleep.
Adding to the nerves is learning the new sounds in my house and neighborhood. I no longer have trains but now I hear planes. When my parents stayed over the first night, my dad told me all the noises that were my furnace. The knocking as it expands and contracts. I actually think it sounds more like a person coughing in the basement. At least when it comes on in the bathroom...and blows around the sheer curtain (see need those blinds! haha).
I heard a lovely song on the radio the other night which seems appropriate. I first thought it was Anya Marina, but it's Orenda Fink (of Azure Ray). ( Why is the night sad )
It was also the easiest and hardest book I've ever written, coming off the heels of SHIVER's immediate and crazy success. I can only imagine that Chris, the cover designer, felt the same way I did writing LINGER when he was trying to design the cover for it, because the SHIVER cover was such a smashing success, how would he follow it?
Well, I think he did. Behold, ze official cover of LINGER!
And now, the first paragraph(s). I've been asked a couple of times if folks can repost either of these things on their blogs and the answer is an absolute YES I'D BE FLATTERED PLEASE DO!!! Okay . . . the first bit of LINGER:

This is the story of a boy who used to be a wolf and a girl who was becoming one.
Just a few months ago, it was Sam who was the mythical creature. His was the disease we couldn’t cure. His was the good-bye that meant the most. He had the body that was a mystery, too strange and wonderful and terrifying to comprehend.
But now it is spring. With the heat, the remaining wolves will soon be falling out of their wolf pelts and back into their human bodies. Sam stays Sam, and Cole stays Cole, and it’s only me who’s not firmly in my own skin.
Is it what you expected?!
Square fabric napkins are super simple, especially when you follow our easy directions for how to make a perfect double-turn, narrow hem with clean corners. This holiday, pass on the paper, and make your own beautiful cloth napkins.
Shopping for a first embroidery machine can be a little intimidating to the uninitiated. There are quite a few options to choose from at a wide variety of price points. Fortunately for you, we did our homework in preparation for Monogram Week, and have broken down the necessities to a few top-level considerations.
The biggest item in most bedrooms in the bed, therefore, it ranks as star-of-the-show in our teen room makeover. Plus, as anyone who knows a teen understands (or anyone who remembers being a teen); many, many hours are spent in said bed. In fact, I think most of the day would be spent there given Mom's permission and a nearby bag of Doritos® for sustenance. Our patchwork duvet is made from a dozen different fabric cuts, but they're cleverly sized into just three simple panels.
Hi Glockart fans! I was recently asked by
TUTORIALS? - repost: sorry, the last poll was broken, but it's fixed now. Sorry about that!
There's been some recent interest for me to do some more tutorials. The ones I did a long time ago are pretty old, heh.
